It is programs like alcoholics anonymous which really work to help people who have a problem with alcohol. Indeed, there may be no “cure” for substance abuse. But prison does not even treat the problem. Rehabilitation programs address the issue, provide therapy, peer group pressure and support, a loving and caring response and genuine help so that people may improve their lives for the benefit of themselves and everyone else. Our judicial system is corrupt for putting people in prison because of substance abuse. Even people who drink and drive need help. They do not need to be locked away. Certainly everyone needs to be held accountable and responsible for their actions. But drinking and substance abuse are addictive behaviors which cause people to be impaired and irresponsible. So you do not throw such people in jail; rather, you endeavor to treat the problem with appropriate intervention and programs designed to change people’s behavior and make the more responsible individuals. This is not an issue of treating celebrities and the wealthy like everyone else. It is an issue of treating everyone in a way that helps them and helps society. You do not solve any problems for people with substance abuse issues by locking them up, by putting them behind bars, by shutting them away from society, confining them to tiny cells behind electric doors and high fences strung with razor wire. Putting Paris Hilton in jail for any amount of time is an illustration of how sick, corrupt and failed is the judicial system. Legislators and judges are a large part of the problem because they cannot come up with creative solutions. Jail is NOT a creative solution for a person with an alcohol problem. Paris Hilton should be in rehabilitation, in AA, and be receiving medical help, therapy and treatment for her substance abuse. The fact a legislators and judges cannot see this emphasized how foolish, ignorant and corrupt the judicial system is. What has happened to Paris Hilton is happening to people across America. People who need medical treatment and/or therapy and help for their substance abuse problems are being put in jail because society is basically ignorant, motivated by paranoid and a revenge ethic. The Free Paris 9818783 That’s Hot design series is a promotion to raise awareness to the fact that the judicial system in America is broken. Those who make laws are also ignorant when they punish people for substance abuse instead of legislate for their treatment. When are we going to wake up to the fact that when people abuse alcohol, drugs or other chemical substances they have a problem and need help, not to be locked away! It is just ignorant to lock people away when they have a substance abuse problem. Substance abuse effects everyone. It certainly effects those who have been the victim of druck drivers and who have lost family members due to substance abuse. But you don’s fix the problem by locking otherwise good people away, by putting them in jail. You solve the problem by one-on-one mentoring programs like AA and by intensive life long therapy programs. This is especially true with alcohol abuse and it is also true with other forms of substance abuse. Wake up America! Free Paris! Free inmate number 9818783! That’s HOT!
